What the 999.9 (sometimes simply shown as 9999 or .9999) stands for is the millesimal fineness scale where the gold buffalo coin is guaranteed to be a minimum of 999.9/1000 pure gold. Expressed another way, the gold coin is a minimum of 99.99% gold.
